Trilogy Week #53 - End of Days

So this week we interrupt our scheduled Christmas movie trilogies to bring you  this important announcement.

As we all know, the Mayan calendar ends this Friday December 21st 2012. So in preparation for Armageddon let's watch some Earth ending movies and see what the rapture will be like when the time comes. Spoiler Alert* there will be riots.

Title: Melancholia
Year: 2011
Director: Lars Von Trier
Cast: Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Keifer Sutherland, Stellan Skarsgard, John Hurt, Alexander Skarsgard
Rated: R
Running Time: 2hrs. 16mins.

My Review: This film is not really about the end of the world. It's a movie about how people with depression react to stressful situations. And do you know how they react? They don't... sounds exciting.... So the movies starts out with 8 minutes of slow-motion vignettes. And ironically this is the most beautiful and interesting part of the whole movie. They look like photo realistic oil paintings, and they are beautiful to watch. Now with that out of the way the rest of the movie is about a terrible train wreck of a wedding with horrible people in it. Then we just sit with a family sitting around in their mansion waiting for a rouge planet to hit the Earth and end all their lives. The End, nothing much to it. 3 out of 10 run away planets.

aaaaaaaaaaa

Title: 4:44 Last Day on Earth
Year: 2011
Director: Abel Ferrara
Cast: Willem Dafoe, Shanyn Leigh
Rated: R
Running Time: 1hr. 22mins.

My Review: Well this is just more of the same. It's the last day on earth, and  we are watching a couple in their New York loft waiting for the rapture. So what do we see, we watch them watch TV, skype with friends & family, paint, and bone a lot. It's a fly on the wall telling of two people living on the last day on Earth. Nothing happens. What a waste of an apocalypse movie. 2 out of 10 painting of snakes.

bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb

Title: Seeking a Friend for the End of the World
Year: 2012
Director: Lorene Scafaria
Cast: Steve Carell, Keira Knightley, Adam Brody, Martin Sheen, Nancy Carell, Rob Corddry, Connie Britton, Patton Oswalt
Rated: R
Running Time: 1hr. 41mins.

My Review: This is by far the best of the three. A black comedy that shows how people will react to the end of the world. Rioting in the streets, mass suicide, virgins getting lucky, orgies, excessive drinking and drug use. With all that going on, the movie can still have a sense of humor, and have a cohesive story plot. Steve Carell is great as always, and Keira Knightley is absolutely adorable. 7 out of 10 Dogs named Sorry
