Trilogy Week #8 - Christmas Chaos

Merry Christmas Everybody! As this is the most stressful time of the year, What better than to watch some Chaotic Christmas Classics. For most people Christmas isn't all sweet angels and chubby cherubs. It's a time for maxed out credit cards, whiny kids, and shitty Christmas gifts you can't wait to throw away after your annoying relatives leave. So try not to pull out too much hair this holiday season. Hopefully these movies will help medicate your weary tired souls, until next Christmas.

Title: Bad Santa
Year: 2003
Director: Terry Zwigoff
Cast: Billy Bob Thornton, Tony Cox, Brett Kelly, John Ritter, Bernie Mac, Lauren Graham, Lauren Tom
Rated: R

My Review: Billy Bob Thornton is hilarious in this movie. He play a truly disgusting slob. He makes Randy Quiad in Christmas Vacation look sophisticated. I mean there's a part in the movie where a kid sneezes a chocolate bar in his face, and the entire day he never wipes it off. Oh, and he pisses his pants on purpose. Apparently Billy Bob admitted that he was intoxicated during filming. And if you've already seen this film, it's not surprising.  This movie is not for the easily offended. With gross humor, lots of profanity. In fact  the word "fuck", and it's variations, are used 159 times throughout the movie. The word "shit" is heard 73 times, amid a total of approx. 300 swear words. It does get bleak at times, but it doesn't distract from the humor, which is constant through out the film. What a way for John Ritter to leave his last mark, with this his farewell appearance on the silver screen. He does a great job with the role that he was given. This is a highly inappropriate movie. truly not for kids. But that's why I like it. Let the kiddies watch Christmas with the Cranks, or that shitty Vince Vaughn one. I'll stick with this one. 7 out of 10

Jonny's Review: What a strange movie that happens to take place during Christmas.
Billy Bob Thornton plays a great role of a completely drunken nobody, he just works for the "feel" of this story, with Tony Cox as his side kick/leader. This film is just gritty, and is downright gross. What I got from the film is that it’s a glimpse into somebodies life. I can’t really say much about this than it’s dirty feel, but that it actually keeps you interested through the whole story. It builds up so much that it’s surprising to see that even a dirt ball of a man can care for a loser of a kid. I think there’s a moral in this story, but I’m not sure of what it is.  8/10

Title: Christmas Vacation
Year: 1989
Director: Jeremiah S. Chechik
Cast: Chevy Chase, Beverly D'Angelo, Juliette Lewis, Johnny Galecki, Randy Quaid
Rated: PG-13

My Review: John Hughes does it again! I've only been doing these reviews for two months, and this is the third movie of his I've done already. He truly was a holiday genius. Chevy Chase's comedic timing is flawless. The chaos that ensues is awesome. Gift wrapped cat, blinding Christmas lights, stealing pine trees, & exploding  Santas, ect. ect. This movie doesn't have a real story, mainly because this was based on a short story John Hughes wrote about his own holiday vacation entitled "Christmas 59". So the movie is a collection of Christmas memories. Good and bad, yet over exaggerated of course. It get's better and better, when the antics get worse and worse. A funny thing about this movie, is it never takes place on Christmas Day. Only on Christmas Eve. Hallelujah! Holy Shit!!! 9 out of 10

Jonny's Review: Now a days, this film has become one of the classic Christmas stories, probably due to the good writing and re-watch-ability this film contains. Chevy Chase does a good job in this film as the over happy dad who just does too much for the holidays. You'll never see a better written Christmas movie like this, these days. The execution of the jokes goes perfect to the story. I especially love E.G. Marshall's role of the drunk grandfather who just doesn't give a damn. I’m not sure Elaine Benes...I mean Julia Louis-Dreyfus was in this film, I've got nothing against her, but she doesn't do anything for the film. She's only there to get attacked by a dog chasing a squirrel. All I can really say, is that it’s a nice film. it’s just one of those Christmas movies that you watch every year because... well, it’s a Christmas movie! With Liberty and Justice for all.... Play ball!  6/10

Title: Scrooged
Year: 1988
Director: Richard Donner
Cast: Bill Murray, Karen Allen, Bobcat Goldthwait, John Forsythe, John Glover, Carol Kane,
Rated: PG-13

My Review: When I saw this movie for the first time, I thought it was a Tim Burton movie. Not knowing it was directed by Richard Donner (Superman, Lethal Weapon, The Goonies). It has that same humorously dark and twisted take you see in a Tim Burton movie. Even Danny Elfman did the soundtrack. It feels like a mix between Beetlejuice, and Robocop. This movie only works because of Bill Murray. He is great, who else do you know in the late 80's who could play such a perfect sarcastic ass? This is my favorite adaptation of A Christmas Carol. The writing is superb, with a perfect balance of creepiness, and comedy.  Highly recommended. 10 out of 10. Don't believe me? Watch it agian!

Jonny's Review: If your looking for an adaptation of a classic story that "actually" has some original thought put into it, this is the film to watch around the holidays. Bill Murray is very "Bill Murray" in this film, which is always enjoyable, he plays the perfect modern Scrooge. I also love Bobcat Goldthwait's performance as he starts to go crazy. This is such a good adaptation of A Christmas Carol, that it kind of feels like it's own original story. Every joke, feel, reaction, and casting was done well. Enjoyment throughout the whole film.   9/10
